Should I join the Air Force Firefighting program or stay here and do firefighting as a civilian?

22 Apr

Hi i’m 19 yrs old and live in Tampa. I’m very patriotic and am interested in joining the air force to do firefighting, but i’ve obtained my EMT-B/Firefighting l & ll state certifications all ready. I have a set position here waiting for me and I will be hired with Tampa Fire in Feb 2008, but I don’t know whether to stay and take this opportunity which I have guaranteed or to take my chance with the air force firefighting. So if anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you…..

Join the Air National Guard and do both. That is.. if that job is available on the Guard side.

“Feb 2008″? I assume you mean Feb 2009.
If I had a guaranteed job offer, I would take it. Right now, jobs are hard to find so I would take advantage of any opportunity. It might not be there when you return from active military service.
While working full-time as a civilian firefigther, consider serving part-time with the military reserves or air national guard. The only bad thing is that since you will probably look for a unit close to where you live, they may not have firefighting positions unless you are near an airport. You could always go after a position that has firefighting as a secondary function.

I’d say go Air Force…. They do more training than actually fighting fires.. my friend cross trained into fire services in the AF… he said they hung out at the firehouse all the time, lifted weights, and other leisure activities lol… they work 24 on & 24 off (work for 24 hours & off for 24 hours)… & the military is a good job choice today with the way the economy is going.. but they do safety checks & things along that line too… he said it was a cake job.. since you’re already a firefighter it should be an easy transition for you…
